God’s blessing of Beauty – I Timothy 4:3-5; 6:17:
The portion of beauty contained in every element of God’s glorious creation is the direct result of the fullness of His Holiness, uncreated, always existent Sovereign beauty. And, inherent in that beauty is the blessing of pleasure & enjoyment – Is 6:1-6.
1 Cor 2:9: 9 but just as it is written, “ Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him.”
“Beauty” as defined in Noah Webster’s 1828 Dictionary:
Beauty, n. bu’ty
- An assemblage of graces, an assemblage of properties in the form of the person or any other object, which pleases the eye. In the person, due proportion or symmetry of parts constitutes the most essential property to which we annex the term beauty. In the face, the regularity and symmetry of the features, the color of the skin, the expression of the eye, are among the principal properties which constitute beauty. But as it is hardly possible to define all the properties which constitute beauty, we may observe in general, that beauty consists of whatever pleases the eye of the beholder, whether in the human body, in a tree, in a landscape, or in any other object. Beauty is intrinsic, and perceived by the eye at first view, or relative, to perceive which the aid of the understanding and reflection is requisite. Thus, the beauty of a machine is not perceived, till we understand its uses, and adaptation to its purpose. This is called the beauty of utility. By any easy transition, the word beauty is used to express what is pleasing to the other senses, or to the understanding. Thus we say, the beauty of a thought, of a remark, of sound, &c. So beauty, armed with virtue, bows the soul with a commanding, but sweet control.
- A particular grace, feature, or ornament; any particular thing which is beautiful and pleasing; as the beauties of nature.
- A particular excellence, or a part which surpasses in excellence that with which it is united; as the beauties of an author.
- A beautiful person, in scripture, the chief dignity or ornament. 2 Sam 1.
- In the arts, symmetry of parts; harmony; justness of composition.
- Joy and gladness. Isa 61. Order, prosperity, peace, holiness, Ezekiel 26.
As incomprehensiblely beautiful as this world is, its beauty surrounds us every day, yet it is temporary, created by God as the theater in which He would place the stage of human history from which He would draw to Himself (Jn 6:44,65; I Ptr 1:3) His elect children, the bride of Christ (Titus 1:1-3; Ephs 1:3-6). Once He has fulfilled that plan, one fresh new day at a time since Gen 1:1, He will then destroy this beautiful but temporary entire universe (II Ptr 3:3-13) to usher in His glorious, beautiful, beyond anything men ever saw in that temporary universe (I Cor2:9), New Heaven & New Earth where His elect children will live in perfect, glorified, sinless worshipful harmony & loving fellowship with Him in the fullness of His Trinitarian majesty & glory – Rev 21-22.
